Sun and Saddle Leather was the first collection of Badger Clark poems to be published, in 1915, and remains his most popular book. Extolling the cowboy life of the Old West in general and of Arizona Territory in particular, it was later combined with his second volume of southwestern poems, Grass Grown Trails (1917). Scholars have selected this work as being culturally important and part of the knowledge base of civilization as we know it. Included are many Spanish words and phrases, that he first picked up during a year and a half spent in Cuba.
“This collection, written by a working cowboy in the early 1900s, ranged in emotion from rejoicing in the free life and the beauty of the desert to lamenting its eventual loss as fences began to appear and old partners settled down to marry. A Border Affair, a poem about a lost love, was recorded by Emmylou Harris in the 80's for her album Cimarron, and the introduction said that many of Clark's poems became songs for the singing cowboys of his era.” Debbie- Booktuber Review
